A beautiful example of American studio art glass, this hand-blown vase by glass artist James Clark, dated 1983, features an intricate feathered design in rich shades of amber, chocolate brown, and cream, suspended within translucent glass.

The rounded, baluster-like form has gently sloping shoulders, a short circular neck, and a polished, glossy surface that beautifully captures the movement of the glass. Sweeping feather-like patterns rise through the body, creating an organic composition of delicate branching lines, soft swirls, and darker pools of color. The interplay between transparent and opaque glass gives the decoration remarkable depth, particularly when illuminated by natural light.

Feathering is a decorative technique with a long history in glassmaking, in which contrasting colors are manipulated into flowing, combed, or feather-like patterns while the glass remains hot. Revived and reinterpreted by studio glass artists during the 20th century, the technique celebrates the fluidity of molten glass and the individual character of each handmade piece.

Dated 1983, this vase reflects the expressive craftsmanship of the American studio glass movement. Its earthy coloration and sculptural proportions make it equally appealing displayed independently or incorporated into a collection of antique and vintage glass, ceramics, and decorative objects.
