A lovely piece of American Victorian majolica, this covered jar from Hampshire Pottery of Keene, New Hampshire is modeled in the form of an orange. The rounded body has a richly textured, orange-toned surface, while the domed cover is decorated with a cluster of sculpted green leaves, giving the piece the unmistakable appearance of a freshly picked citrus fruit.

Hampshire Pottery was founded in 1871 and became known for its colorful, highly glazed majolica wares beginning in the late 1870s. Its early decorative production is particularly appealing to collectors for its inventive naturalistic forms and saturated glazes.

The form was originally intended as a marmalade or preserve jar, making it an especially charming example of Victorian tableware that turned an everyday serving object into a decorative conversation piece. 

For burning, the lid can be displayed beside the vessel, allowing the orange form and sculptural leaves to remain part of the arrangement. It would be especially lovely styled with antique silver, wicker, botanical prints, transferware, or other majolica, or as part of a collected kitchen shelf filled with fruit and vegetable forms.
