A beautifully proportioned silver-plated covered sugar urn, richly detailed with hand-worked floral decoration, classical Greek key borders and delicate beading.
Made in the tradition of formal silver tea service, the vessel takes the form of a small classical urn: a rounded bowl raised on a spreading pedestal foot, flanked by two elegant scrolling handles and finished with a tall, tiered lid. Beaded borders trace the foot, rim and lid, while a bold Greek key or meander band encircles the upper body, giving the piece a distinctly Neoclassical character.
The form itself is consistent with a covered sugar bowl or sugar urn, a piece traditionally used as part of a tea or coffee service. Covered sugar vessels became especially decorative objects in their own right, frequently taking inspiration from classical urns and incorporating pedestal feet, paired handles and elaborate finials. Comparable English examples survive with two handles, pedestal bases and fitted covers.
As a candle vessel, this one is particularly charming because it still reads as a miniature piece of formal silver. The Neoclassical details would also pair especially well with intaglios, antique engravings, old silver, Wedgwood and other classical pieces.
