A handsome English George III-period mahogany knife box, dating to circa 1790–1810, with a serpentine, blocked form and richly figured mahogany construction. The case is beautifully embellished with contrasting crossbanding, fine stringing, and geometric inlaid decoration, creating an elegant architectural effect.
Knife boxes were an important component of the formal Georgian dining table, designed to store and protect a household’s collection of table knives. Their cases were often made as miniature pieces of fine furniture, employing the figured mahogany, veneers, crossbanding, stringing, and inlay characteristic of larger Georgian furnishings. Examples with refined cabinetmaking and original period hardware are particularly appealing to collectors.
This example no longer retains its original knife fittings, leaving the interior open and wonderfully versatile for storage today. It can be used to house everything from linens and correspondence to small collections and personal treasures, while still functioning beautifully as a decorative piece of Georgian furniture.
Origin: George III period, circa 1790–1810; England.
Materials: Mahogany, contrasting wood inlay and stringing.
Dimensions: 14.75" H × 9" W × 12" D.
Condition: Good to fair antique condition. The piece retains a beautiful warm patina with scattered surface marks, scratches, and minor areas of wear throughout. There is some age-related separation and loss to portions of the crossbanding and inlaid decoration. The original hardware remains, though the box does not close flush. The interior has been cleared of its original knife fittings and is now open for storage.
