An extraordinary English Aesthetic Movement silver plate biscuit barrel by George Goodfellow & Sons of London, richly engraved with a fantastical composition of birds, ferns, flowers, fans and exotic foliage.
The cylindrical barrel is almost entirely treated as a canvas for decoration. One side features a long-legged bird beneath an elaborate fan-shaped reserve surrounded by fern fronds and tropical vegetation, while another reveals a bird in flight among asymmetrically arranged branches and foliage. The imagery shifts as the vessel is turned, giving the piece the layered, slightly unexpected composition so characteristic of late Victorian Aesthetic design.
The decoration reflects the strong influence of Japonisme on British decorative arts during the Aesthetic Movement, when Japanese art helped inspire a new vocabulary of asymmetry, flattened botanical forms, birds, fans, bamboo and other motifs drawn from the natural world. The barrel is finished with a hinged lid engraved with trailing foliage and centered by an ornamental finial. A delicate beaded border runs around the upper and lower edges, while the entire vessel rests within a separate oval silver-plated stand raised on four wonderfully sculptural foliate feet.
Originally made as a biscuit barrel or biscuit box, it would have been intended for serving and storing biscuits at the Victorian table or sideboard. Repurposed as a candle vessel, the broad cylindrical form is especially striking: the candle can be poured directly into the removable barrel while the engraved exterior and elevated stand remain completely visible. The original hinged lid can be closed when the candle isn't burning, allowing the piece to return to the appearance of an antique decorative object between uses.
