A substantial vintage open-work, woven cane ottoman in the style of Italian modernist designer Franco Albini, featuring a sculptural rounded silhouette and a richly mottled, burnt bamboo-like finish.
Measuring an impressive 25 inches in diameter, the ottoman is constructed from gracefully curved rattan ribs secured to a series of circular supports with woven cane bindings. Its openwork framework creates a distinctive barrel-shaped form, while concentric rings at the center provide a striking geometric focal point. The finish ranges from warm honey and amber to deep reddish-brown, with darker markings that emphasize the natural character of the bamboo and rattan.
The design closely recalls the Italian rattan ottomans associated with Franco Albini during the mid-20th century, often referred to as “Lobster Pot” stools for their rounded, basket-like construction. Albini's approach to furniture brought together modernist geometry and traditional craftsmanship, exploring the sculptural possibilities of natural materials. Comparable Italian rattan ottomans from the 1960s share the same curved framework, open construction, and intricate bindings.
With its generous proportions, this example has the presence of a proper ottoman rather than a petite occasional stool. It would make a beautiful addition to a collected living room, positioned beside an upholstered chair or used as a sculptural accent among antique furnishings. The warm tortoiseshell coloration is particularly appealing alongside darker woods, traditional textiles, and layered interiors.
