A wonderfully decorative mid-19th-century English red transferware teapot, combining an elaborate molded form with an unusually delicate allover floral print.

The rounded body is covered in a finely detailed diagonal lattice pattern, each reserve punctuated by tiny floral sprays and scrolling foliage. The same decoration continues across the domed lid, while a repeating floral border encircles the rim. Against the crisp white body, the deep red transfer has the warm cranberry tone so characteristic of early English colored transferware.

The form is every bit as interesting as the decoration. The teapot rests on an elaborate molded foliate foot, with a sweeping scroll handle enriched with raised leaf ornament and a long sculptural spout terminating in what appears to be an animal-head mask. A molded floral or bud-form finial completes the lid. These sculptural details reflect the Victorian taste for combining transfer-printed decoration with increasingly elaborate molded ceramic forms.
