Silk Embroidery of Germania

A striking 19th-century European embroidered panel depicting a female warrior, richly worked in silk and metallic threads on silk. The crowned figure stands sword in hand and shield at her side, with a double-headed eagle emblem, overlooking a landscape with a castle and a passing train. The combination of classical allegory with the distinctly modern addition of the railway makes this an especially intriguing example of 19th-century textile folk art.

The imagery appears to relate to Lorenz Clasen’s 1860 painting Germania auf der Wacht am Rhein (Germania at Watch on the Rhine), a patriotic allegory created against the backdrop of the political tensions surrounding the Rhine. While the embroidery closely follows the composition, the inclusion of the train suggests a later 19th-century interpretation, reflecting the rapid expansion of rail travel during the period.
