English Pastoral Landscape with Cattle by Frederick William Hayes

Sale price$650.00

A late 19th-century English pastoral oil painting by Frederick William Hayes, depicting cattle standing at the edge of a still river, their reflections softly mirrored in the water. Beyond, a thatched cottage sits nestled among trees, with a clearing of open countryside and a pale blue sky unfolding to the right.

The composition is quietly atmospheric, with a softened palette and gentle handling of light that lends the scene a calm, almost suspended quality. Hayes’ sensitivity to rural life is evident in both the naturalistic rendering of the cattle and the tranquil balance of land, water, and sky.

Hayes (1848–1918) was a British landscape painter, illustrator, and writer who exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts and was a founding member of the Liverpool Watercolour Society. His work reflects a deep engagement with the English countryside, often capturing these quiet, pastoral moments with a romantic yet grounded sensibility.
