An exquisite miniature lidded dish attributed to Elkington & Co. of Birmingham, England, featuring a rich cobalt blue glass insert supported by an ornate brass-toned metal stand. Its unusual triangular form, graceful scrollwork, and decorative floral finial make it a particularly charming example of English tableware, now selected for a second life as a one-of-a-kind candle vessel.
The deep cobalt glass is beautifully contrasted by the warm metallic finish of its fitted stand, which rests on three rounded feet. Elaborate scrolling supports rise along the sides of the dish, while the shaped base echoes the contours of the glass insert. A fitted metal lid completes the piece, crowned by a sculptural finial modeled as a small flower or fruit resting among leaves.
Elkington & Co. was among Britain's most influential decorative metalwork manufacturers, established in Birmingham during the 19th century. The firm became especially celebrated for pioneering commercial electroplating techniques and producing finely crafted silver-plated tableware and decorative objects. Its work helped bring elaborate metalwork designs into fashionable Victorian households.
Originally intended as a small decorative table vessel, this charming piece has been selected for conversion into an antique candle. The combination of jewel-toned glass and sculptural metalwork is particularly suited to an old-world English Christmas, while the fitted lid allows the vessel to remain a beautiful decorative object long after its candle has burned.
