Early English Parquetry Star Box

An early 19th-century English wooden box decorated with bold geometric parquetry in contrasting veneers. The lid is centered by a large multi-point star, flanked by smaller radiating starbursts, while the front and sides are worked in a repeating diamond pattern. This type of decorative inlay became especially fashionable during the Regency period, when contrasting specimen woods were used to create graphic, almost architectural designs.

The hinged interior is lined in deep crimson velvet, giving the box a particularly rich contrast against the warm wood tones. Its long, shallow proportions suggest it may originally have served as a small writing, stationery, or keepsake box, though without surviving fitted compartments I would leave the original function open rather than overstate it. Today it works beautifully for jewelry, correspondence, small collected objects, or simply as a decorative box on a desk or shelf.

Condition: Good antique condition with age-related surface wear, scratches, small veneer losses and separations, minor cracking, and wear to the edges and corners. The velvet lining shows age and use, including loose threads and light surface wear. Hardware and lock plate remain present, though non-working; key is not included.
