A beautiful pair of 19th-century Staffordshire ironstone preserve/condiment bowls by E. Challinor & Co., decorated in the romantic "Lozère" pattern in blue transfer.

Each bowl features a picturesque pastoral landscape at center, depicting a romantic architectural scene surrounded by trees, water, and figures, framed by an elaborate border of floral garlands, scrollwork, and additional scenic vignettes. The softly aged blue transfer has developed a wonderful depth and patina against the warm ivory ironstone ground.

The Lozere pattern takes its name from Lozère, a region of southern France, and was produced by E. Challinor during the mid-19th century. Examples are known in multiple colorways, including blue, brown, mulberry, and flow blue.

These petite preserve bowls were part of the specialized serving pieces found within Victorian table services, likely intended for preserves, jams, or other accompaniments at the table. Their smaller scale makes them particularly charming today, whether displayed with other transferware or used as individual trinket dishes.
