Quantity: Set of 3
A charming trio of 19th-century English transferware in Davenport’s atmospheric “Cyprus” pattern, comprising a bread plate, berry bowl, and small condiment or preserve bowl.
The pattern features a romantic architectural landscape with exotic, palm-like trees and distant buildings, surrounded by an elaborate border of scrolling foliage, flowers, and architectural vignettes. Executed in flow mulberry transfer, the imagery has a beautifully softened, almost watercolor-like quality where the printed decoration gently bleeds into the surrounding ground.
The pieces were produced by Davenport, one of the most important and prolific Staffordshire pottery manufacturers of the 19th century. Founded by John Davenport at Longport in 1794, the firm remained in the Davenport family for nearly a century, operating several factories and becoming one of the largest pottery businesses in Britain. By the 1840s, the company employed more than 1,500 workers and produced an extensive range of earthenware, ironstone, porcelain, and transfer-printed tablewares for both the British and export markets.
After John Davenport retired in 1830, his sons Henry and William continued the business. Following Henry’s death in 1835, the firm became William Davenport & Co., the name associated with much of its important mid-19th-century production. Davenport was particularly known for its extensive range of transfer-printed wares and scenic patterns, with the company producing numerous forms for the Victorian table.
The three different forms offer a lovely glimpse into the variety of a period table service, while their differing scale makes them equally appealing collected together, layered into a tablescape, or displayed individually among other antique ceramics.
