A beautiful 19th-century English dessert plate by Davenport, decorated in the atmospheric “Cyprus” pattern with a picturesque architectural landscape surrounded by an elaborate floral and scrolling border.

Founded in Longport, Staffordshire, Davenport was one of England’s important 19th-century pottery manufacturers, producing a wide range of earthenware and ironstone wares for the British and export markets. The firm became particularly well known for its finely detailed transfer-printed wares, including richly decorated scenic patterns such as “Cyprus.”

The central scene depicts a romantic architectural landscape, framed by an intricate border of flowers, scrolling foliage, and architectural vignettes. The decoration is rendered in a characteristic flow transfer, where the printed design softly bleeds into the surrounding ground, creating the hazy, painterly quality so desirable in antique flow transferware.

At dessert-plate scale, this piece is lovely for serving sweets or pastries, layering into a collected tablescape, or displaying alongside other transferware for a more collected look. The soft variation created by the transfer process makes each example feel particularly individual.

Please Note: Antique transferware naturally varies from piece to piece. Differences in the flow and intensity of the transfer, color saturation, pattern clarity, crazing, staining, discoloration, and other signs of age are to be expected. These variations are part of the character and beauty of antique ceramics, and no two pieces will be exactly alike. Please review the individual photographs for the specific condition and character of each piece.
