A beautiful antique Davenport “Amoy” flow blue serving dish, featuring a charming Chinoiserie scene of figures beneath a parasol, surrounded by flowering foliage and water. The design is rendered in rich cobalt blue, with the characteristic soft, diffused quality of flow blue that gives the pattern its wonderfully atmospheric appearance.
The “Amoy” pattern takes its name from Amoy (present-day Xiamen), China, a historic port associated with Western trade and the exchange of Chinese goods. Chinoiserie patterns such as this reflected the strong 19th-century fascination with East Asian art and decorative motifs.
This example is an especially lovely elongated octagonal form, with clipped corners and a wide, elaborately decorated border of scrolling foliage, florals, and geometric detailing. The compact form makes it a particularly versatile piece for serving, displaying, or styling with other pieces of antique transferware.
