Creamware Basketweave Scalloped Plates, Pair

A charming pair of vintage Italian ceramic plates modeled entirely in the manner of woven basketry, from the tightly worked center to the openwork scalloped border.

Each plate features concentric rows of raised basketweave surrounding a small geometric medallion at the center. The border transitions into an especially pretty pierced or reticulated rim, formed from repeating elongated loops that create a lace-like scalloped edge. Finished in a warm ivory glaze, the monochromatic palette allows all of that molded texture to do the work.The underside bears a printed Italy mark with a monogram, though I haven't found enough documentation to confidently assign the mark to a particular manufacturer.

Beautiful as serving plates for a table layered with antique silver, transferware and old glass, they're equally good displayed upright in a plate rack or incorporated into a wall of collected ceramics. The pierced rims are particularly effective on display, where the openwork silhouette becomes almost as decorative as the basketweave itself.
