Cotton & Barlow “Medina” Luncheon Plate

Antique English transferware luncheon plate by Cotton & Barlow in the Medina pattern, dating to circa 1850–1857. The plate features a beautiful blue transfer-printed landscape scene to the center, depicting an exotic architectural landscape with domed pavilions, fountains, figures, and lush trees, surrounded by an elaborate chinoiserie border of architectural vignettes, flowers, and scrolling foliage.

Produced in Longton, Staffordshire, England, during the brief partnership of William Cotton and Thomas Waterhouse Barlow, the Medina pattern is one of the firm's documented and recognizable transferware patterns.

The softly aged blue-and-white palette, unusual octagonal form, and wonderfully detailed transfer make this a beautiful example of early Victorian Staffordshire transferware. Lovely displayed on its own or layered with other blue-and-white ceramics.
