A wonderfully sculptural vintage ceramic rabbit-form serving dish, modeled with long upright ears, tucked paws and an unusual allover basketweave texture. Finished in a glossy ivory glaze, the woven relief gives the piece the appearance of wicker or woven cane despite being entirely ceramic.
An original Stern & Mann’s label survives inside. Stern & Mann was a historic department store in Canton, Ohio, founded in 1887 by Isidor Stern and Henry Mann.
The combination of basketry and animal form gives this piece a particularly charming naturalistic quality. Display it on open shelving, a kitchen hutch or dining-room sideboard, or use it as an unexpected centerpiece among transferware, majolica and other figural ceramics. Closed, it works beautifully simply as a piece of decorative sculpture.
