A wonderfully whimsical Shafford Original ceramic condiment jar, modeled after a garden vegetable and finished in glossy shades of celadon and cream. The original form was intended for serving condiments, spreads, or preserves, with the included spoon making it especially practical for the table.
The cylindrical vessel is molded with elongated cauliflower-like leaves and topped with a wonderfully dimensional, irregular cauliflower-shaped lid. The most charming detail may be the attached spoon, with a raised pea-pod handle featuring individually molded peas.
Produced in Japan for Shafford Original, this piece belongs to the company's playful line of novelty and botanical-themed tableware. Shafford produced a wide range of decorative Japanese ceramics during the mid-to-late 20th century, including whimsical vegetable, fruit, floral, and garden-inspired serving pieces.
Once converted, it would make an especially charming kitchen candle in a think breakfast nook, kitchen shelf, or dining table. The lid could be displayed beside the vessel while burning, then replaced afterward. It would also be adorable styled with other garden-themed ceramics, antique silver, fruit, vegetables, or botanical pieces.
