Aesthetic Movement Paper Clip

A late 19th-century cast iron desk clip with an ornate floral and foliate relief pattern across the shaped front plate. The spring-loaded mechanism at the reverse allows the broad lower jaw to clamp papers securely, making pieces like this useful for letters, bills, receipts, calling cards, and other correspondence. Similar Victorian clips were made to rest on a desk or be mounted to a wall.

The dark oxidized surface has worn through to warmer brown tones along the raised decoration, emphasizing the embossed design. Functional as a paper or letter holder today, it also works beautifully as a small Victorian desk object or library accessory.
