A handsome antique Victorian wall pocket featuring an elaborately carved wooden frame and a richly colored needlepoint panel depicting a majestic stag. Combining the ornamental woodwork of the nineteenth century with traditional sporting imagery, this distinctive piece is a particularly charming example of Victorian decorative arts.
The dark-stained wooden frame features an intricate arrangement of pierced scrollwork, sweeping acanthus leaves, and carved foliate motifs. Its symmetrical silhouette rises to a dramatic leaf-carved crest and terminates in a decorative pendant below. The openwork carving surrounds a shield-shaped textile pocket, secured along its edges with decorative metal studs.
The needlepoint is worked against a vivid crimson ground and depicts a stag's head with an impressive set of antlers, surrounded by colorful floral and botanical motifs. Above the stag appears an ornamental monogram, the letter “P,” worked in coordinating shades of gold, green, and red. The combination of heraldic imagery, traditional needlework, and richly carved wood gives the piece a distinctly Victorian character.
Decorative wall pockets were popular household accessories during the nineteenth century, providing a convenient place for correspondence, calling cards, and other small necessities. Often incorporating elaborate woodwork and embroidered or needlepoint panels, they served both practical and ornamental purposes. The stag motif lends this example particular appeal for collectors of antique sporting and country-house furnishings.
A wonderful addition to an entryway, library, study, or traditional English-inspired interior. Particularly handsome displayed alongside antique sporting prints, equestrian accessories, and other decorative objects associated with country-house life.
