Carved Lion Paw

A substantial 19th-century English carved wood furniture foot modeled as a lion’s paw, salvaged from a larger piece of furniture. The oversized scale suggests it once supported a substantial table, cabinet, sofa, or other heavy furnishing rather than a small decorative piece. Lion-paw feet were a recurring motif in English furniture, especially in classical revival and Victorian forms.

Deeply carved toes, rounded knuckles, and foliate carving above give the piece a strong sculptural presence. The dark finish has worn through in places to reveal warmer wood beneath, while old cracks, abrasions, and mounting evidence preserve its history as a working furniture element. Removed from its original context, it reads almost like a small piece of architectural sculpture.
