An exceptional English hammered pewter biscuit barrel by Craftsman Pewter, a trademark associated with the Sheffield silversmithing firm Viners Ltd. Dating to the early 20th century, this beautifully proportioned vessel combines the understated character of Arts and Crafts metalwork with the classical ornament of sculptural lion-mask handles. Originally intended for the tea table, it has been selected for a second life as a one-of-a-kind candle vessel.

The cylindrical body features a richly textured hammered finish, giving the pewter a soft, mottled surface that catches the light beautifully. Two sculptural lion masks support substantial ring handles, lending a wonderfully architectural quality to the otherwise restrained silhouette. A fitted domed lid repeats the hammered decoration and is crowned by a contrasting dark ebonized finial. Subtle bands around the body and lid provide definition without distracting from the beauty of the metalwork.

The underside bears the distinctive CRAFTSMAN PEWTER / SHEFFIELD trademark, featuring a portrait within an oval cartouche. Associated with Viners Ltd., one of Sheffield's established metalworking firms, the Craftsman Pewter range was produced during the interwar period, approximately 1926–1939. The design reflects the continued influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, particularly its appreciation for hand-worked surfaces, traditional materials, and purposeful decorative objects.

Biscuit barrels were familiar fixtures of the English tea table, designed to store and present biscuits for afternoon tea. This example brings a distinctly early 20th-century interpretation to that tradition, pairing practical form with decorative craftsmanship. Now selected for conversion into an antique candle, its handsome pewter finish and lion-mask details make it an especially fitting addition to an old-world English Christmas collection, with a character that extends well beyond the holiday season.
