c. 1904 Tom Brown’s School Days, School Prize Edition

A 1904 Macmillan edition of Thomas Hughes’s Tom Brown’s School Days, the influential Victorian novel first published in 1857 and inspired by Hughes’s own years at Rugby School. Published on the title page simply as “By an Old Boy,” the novel follows Tom Brown through school life, friendship, rivalry, sport, and the traditions of an English public school.

This copy is bound in vivid red leather with raised bands, gilt floral devices, a contrasting dark leather title label, and decorative gilt borders. The front board bears the gilt crest of Bristol Grammar School, founded in 1532, giving the book the distinctive character of a traditional English school prize binding. The red leather and heraldic crest make this one especially striking displayed among darker antique books and old-world objects.
