An evocative early 20th-century oil portrait depicting a fashionable young woman in an oversized black hat and pale pink dress. Her face turns toward the viewer, her dark eyes and softly rouged lips emerging from the shadow of the broad, dramatically angled brim. The contrast between her luminous complexion, delicate clothing, and muted olive-brown background gives the composition a particularly compelling presence.
Signed Chas. M. Carter, Paris, 1902 in the lower right, the painting reflects the fashionable portraiture of the Belle Époque, when Paris was an international center of artistic training and fashionable society. The sitter's exaggerated hat, softly draped neckline, and carefully composed gaze capture the elegance of the period, while the painter's restrained palette and subtle handling of light lend the portrait a more intimate quality.
The work is housed in a decorative gilt frame with scrolling foliate corners and a finely patterned inner border. Its warm gilding complements the painting's earthy tones and pale pinks, creating a lovely contrast with the sitter's dark hat.
A wonderful addition to a collection of antique portraiture, particularly suited to a library, dressing room, or gallery wall.
