c. 1672 Georg Matthäus Vischer “Collmiz” Castle Engraving

An original 17th-century copper engraving by Austrian topographer Georg Matthäus Vischer (1628–1696), depicting the fortified castle of Kollmitz, historically labeled Collmiz. Published in Vienna in 1672 as part of Vischer’s Topographia Archiducatus Austriae Inferioris Modernae, the engraving belongs to his remarkable visual survey of the castles, monasteries, estates, and towns of Lower Austria. Catalogued examples identify Collmiz as plate 13 from the series.

The view shows the castle dramatically positioned above a rocky escarpment, its towers, curtain walls, and clustered buildings rendered in the precise architectural linework characteristic of Vischer’s topographical engravings. Framed with a wide neutral linen mat, it has a wonderful contrast between the small-scale 17th-century image and its larger presentation.

Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning, light foxing and surface variation to the paper. Visible diagonal crease to the upper right portion of the engraving and minor marks consistent with age. Frame and mat show light wear. Please review photographs closely for condition.
