A substantial Victorian ceramic wash basin by T. C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co., produced at the Cauldon Place Works in Hanley, Staffordshire.
The interior is covered in an exceptionally fine brown floral print, creating an almost textile-like ground of hundreds of tiny blossoms. Larger fruiting branches are scattered across the surface in soft shades of plum, green, rust and brown, giving the decoration a wonderfully layered quality when viewed from above.
The underside bears the impressed mark of T. C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co., one of the important Staffordshire manufacturers of the Victorian period. The firm operated under this name at Cauldon Place from 1862 to 1904, producing high-grade earthenware, porcelain and decorative wares and holding a Royal Warrant as “Potters to Her Majesty” Queen Victoria. Also impressed beneath the basin is a British diamond registration mark corresponding to November 10, 1873.
Originally part of a bedroom or dressing-room wash set, a basin of this scale would have been paired with a large water pitcher or ewer. Today, it makes a striking decorative basin in its own right, particularly beautiful on a chest or large table where its unusually detailed interior can remain visible.
