Acanthus Leaf Art Nouveau Candlesticks

A decorative pair of late-19th-century candlesticks in the Art Nouveau taste, each with a slender baluster-form stem worked with scrolling foliate ornament and rising through a shaped leaf-form drip pan to a molded candle cup. The bases are particularly lovely, modeled as broad asymmetric leaves and scrolling foliage rather than the more conventional circular foot.

The design draws from the fluid rocaille and botanical ornament associated with the French Louis XV style, which saw a strong revival during the second half of the 19th century. Their relatively delicate scale and sculptural bases make them especially suited to a mantel, console, or layered tabletop arrangement.
