A charming antique British military uniform print depicting a General Officer of the British Army, accompanied by an original printed description of the ranks and distinctions of general officers. Presented together in a handsome wooden frame with double-window matting, the two pages offer a fascinating glimpse into the uniforms, military hierarchy, and traditions of the British Army during the early nineteenth century.
The illustration depicts a British General Officer standing in full military dress, wearing a scarlet coat with gold epaulettes, white breeches, tall black boots, and a distinctive black bicorne hat. Delicate hand-applied color brings the uniform to life, while the restrained composition and fine engraved details reflect the style of early nineteenth-century military costume illustrations.
The accompanying text, headed British Army. A General Officer., outlines the ranks of Field-Marshal, General, Lieutenant-General, Major-General, and Brigadier-General. It also describes the gold embroidery used to distinguish officers' uniforms and provides a contemporary account of the number of general officers serving in the British Army.
The illustration bears a London publishing imprint for T. Goddard of Pall Mall and T. Booth of Duke Street. Together, the illustrated plate and descriptive text represent the period's growing interest in documenting military dress, rank, and national institutions through illustrated publications.
Beautifully presented in a traditional wooden frame with cream matting and fine ruled borders, this unusual pairing would be particularly appealing in a library, study, or gentleman's dressing room. Its historical subject matter and understated coloring make it a wonderful companion to antique English engravings, sporting prints, and military memorabilia.
