A wonderful 19th-century double portrait miniature framed within an elaborate mosaic-like surround of individually fitted bone plaques and warm brown tortoiseshell-toned bands. The pale bone sections are decorated with finely incised scrolling vines, foliate borders, geometric motifs, and radiating corner details, creating the effect of architectural marquetry on a miniature scale.
Two oval female portraits are set into the central panel, each depicting a woman in fashionable 18th-century dress. One wears powdered curls and a pale gown, while the other is shown with dark curled hair, pearls, and a blue-trimmed dress. The portraits appear to be later interpretations of 18th-century portraiture rather than something I would confidently identify as contemporary 18th-century likenesses.
The reverse is covered with an old handwritten paper document in French, apparently reused as backing material, a charming bit of period construction that reinforces the handmade nature of the piece. A simple metal suspension ring is mounted at the top for display.
Frames combining bone and tortoiseshell were produced during the 19th century for portrait miniatures and other small works, particularly in France and elsewhere in Continental Europe. Comparable surviving examples use the same contrast between pale bone and warm brown tortoiseshell veneer.
