A beautifully weathered antique wooden gathering basket featuring an elongated oval form, a substantial arched handle, and a wonderfully timeworn natural finish. With its simple construction and practical proportions, this charming piece recalls the traditional baskets used for gathering produce, flowers, and other necessities of country life.
The shallow, boat-shaped body is constructed from overlapping wooden slats, secured with small nails and framed by a gently rounded wooden rim. A broad bentwood handle arches across the center, providing a sturdy grip and giving the basket its distinctive silhouette. Beneath the body, two raised wooden runners elevate the basket from the surface, a thoughtful detail that speaks to its utilitarian origins.
Bentwood baskets and wooden trugs have long been associated with rural domestic life, particularly in gardening and agricultural settings. Their lightweight yet sturdy construction made them useful for collecting vegetables, cut flowers, and garden produce. Unlike traditional wicker baskets, examples constructed from wooden slats offer a more architectural form, with the grain, joinery, and natural wear becoming part of their decorative appeal.
The warm patina of the wood, visible nail heads, and gently worn edges give this basket a wonderful sense of age and character. Beautiful filled with seasonal greenery, pinecones, or dried flowers, it would be equally at home on a farmhouse table, kitchen dresser, or antique cupboard. Its understated construction makes it especially appealing alongside traditional English country furnishings and collected utilitarian objects.
