A beautifully timeworn wooden hatmaker’s block, retaining its original crown form and accompanying brim piece. Traditionally used by milliners to shape hats from felt, straw, and other pliable materials, wooden blocks were made in specific forms and sizes to create the desired silhouette of a finished hat. Separate crown and brim blocks were often used together in the traditional blocking process.

This example has a wonderfully sculptural form, with a rounded crown and broad, gently curved brim. The underside retains its original metal mounting hardware, while the wood has developed a rich, warm patina from decades of handling and use. The block is marked “6 3/4” along with additional numerical markings corresponding to the hat size. Comparable surviving hat blocks are frequently marked with both size and identification numbers.

Particularly desirable as a complete example retaining its brim piece, this is a wonderful piece of traditional millinery equipment for a collector, textile enthusiast, or anyone drawn to beautifully worn utilitarian objects. Equally compelling displayed simply as a sculptural object, it brings a wonderful sense of craft and history to a shelf or dressing room.

Origin: Early 20th century.
Material: Beechwood.
Dimensions: TBD
Condition: Very good antique condition with substantial age-related wear, surface checking, splits, scratches, dents, and discoloration throughout. The wood retains a beautiful, naturally developed patina consistent with its former working life. Please see photographs for additional detail.
