A beautiful English silver-plated sugar basket by Barker Ellis, featuring a richly colored cobalt blue glass liner and an elegant pierced metalwork design. Produced by one of Birmingham's established names in decorative silver, this charming basket has been selected for a second life as a one-of-a-kind candle vessel.

The cylindrical basket is raised on three decorative feet with shell-shaped detailing and terminating in small clawed bases. A gracefully arched swing handle rises above the rim, while the silver-plated body features finely pierced geometric borders, elongated vertical openings, and engraved classical urn motifs. The deep cobalt blue glass liner provides a striking contrast to the polished silver, allowing its jewel-toned color to show through the openwork decoration.

Barker Ellis traces its origins to the Birmingham silver-manufacturing firm established in 1801, later known as Barker Brothers before adopting the Barker Ellis name. The company became known for its extensive production of fine silver-plated tableware and decorative objects, many inspired by classical English silver designs. Today, Barker Ellis pieces remain collectible examples of British metalworking, appreciated for their craftsmanship and decorative appeal.

Originally intended to hold sugar or sweets at the table, this little basket has found a new purpose as an antique-inspired candle vessel. Its combination of silver and cobalt glass feels especially appropriate for a traditional English Christmas, while its removable liner and decorative swing handle make it a beautiful object to retain and enjoy beyond the life of the candle.
