Barbour Silver Co. Floral Butter Dish

A beautifully ornate Victorian butter dish by Barbour Bros. Co., featuring an elaborately engraved floral and butterfly motif across its hinged lid. The rectangular form is framed by a delicately beaded border, with graceful openwork handles at either side and a simple rounded finial at the center of the lid.

Butter dishes like this were part of the increasingly elaborate Victorian dining table, when even everyday foods were presented in specialized serving vessels. The period saw an extraordinary proliferation of objects designed for particular foods and courses, and butter was no exception. A dedicated butter dish kept the butter neatly contained and attractively presented at the table.

The underside is marked “Barbour Bros Co / Quadruple Plate”, identifying the piece as the work of Barbour Bros. Co., a Connecticut manufacturer of silver-plated goods active from approximately 1881 to 1892. The firm was succeeded by Barbour Silver Co. in 1892, making the Barbour Bros. mark particularly useful for dating this piece to the 1880s or very early 1890s.

The butterflies, flowers, and engraved botanical sprays make this one especially lovely for a collected table. Use it for its original purpose alongside breakfast or brunch, fill it with butter for a dinner party, or leave it open on a dining room sideboard where the beautifully decorated lid can be appreciated. It would be particularly pretty mixed with mismatched antique silver, blue-and-white china, and other Victorian serving pieces.
