A sculptural vintage Japanese bamboo magazine rack made for Gump’s, San Francisco. The open lattice framework is constructed from warm-toned bamboo arranged in angular crisscrossed panels, with curved upper rails, splayed feet, and a slatted lower shelf for magazines, books, newspapers, or folded textiles.
The natural bamboo has developed rich amber coloration with darker variation around the nodes, giving the piece excellent depth and character. Particularly nice as a functional accent beside a chair, sofa, or desk, with the open construction keeping its substantial form visually light.
Origin: Japan, made for Gump’s, San Francisco, mid-20th century, likely c. 1950s–1970s
