A beautiful 19th-century Staffordshire blue transferware dessert plate in the romantic “Geneva” pattern, featuring a picturesque architectural landscape surrounded by an elaborate ornamental border.

The central scene depicts a grand castellated estate nestled among mature trees, with figures and horses gathered in the foreground. The scene is framed by an intricate border of scrolling foliage, floral sprays, and fine linear decoration, creating the richly detailed appearance characteristic of early Victorian Staffordshire transferware.

The plate is decorated in blue transfer on an ivory earthenware ground, with the softly faded transfer, warm crazing, and gentle surface wear giving the piece a wonderful sense of age.

The reverse bears the “B & D” mark. This mark has been attributed to Blackhurst & Dunning of Tunstall, Staffordshire, a pottery firm active under this name during 1857-1867 until Mr. Dunnings death. Blackhurst & Dunning is documented among the Tunstall manufacturers in the 1868 Staffordshire Potteries Directory.

A lovely example of English blue and white transferware, perfect for an antique tablescape, layered with other dessert plates, or displayed as part of a collection of romantic Staffordshire landscapes.
