A beautifully rendered 19th-century academic figure study depicting a standing female nude in three-quarter profile. The subject turns to look over her shoulder, her long hair gathered across her chest, with one foot resting upon a small block. Delicate graphite shading defines the contours of the figure, balancing anatomical precision with a remarkably expressive, almost contemplative pose.
The drawing reflects the tradition of European academic art training, in which the study of the human figure was considered fundamental to an artist's education. Working from live models, students developed their understanding of proportion, anatomy, light, and form through careful observation. The assured draftsmanship and subtle modeling of this work are characteristic of that classical approach.
A faint handwritten inscription in the upper right appears to reference a French street address, possibly rue Dambantin, No. 38, with a name beneath that may read Mme Barbier. The inscription has not been conclusively deciphered, and the artist remains unidentified.
Presented in a black frame with layered cream matting and fine gilt detailing, the drawing is particularly well suited to a library, study, or thoughtfully collected gallery wall. Its classical subject matter and restrained palette give it a presence that feels both scholarly and intimate.
