19th c. Engraving of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor
A finely executed 19th-century engraved portrait depicting Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, shown crowned and holding the imperial scepter. The engraving is rendered with exceptional line work and tonal depth, capturing the authority and ceremonial presence associated with Maximilian’s reign and legacy as a key figure of the late medieval Holy Roman Empire.
This print originates from Meyer’s Conversations-Lexikon, a well-known German encyclopedic series published in the 19th century. The plate is identified at upper margin as Meyer’s Conv. Lex. N.375, and bears artist and engraver credits along the lower edge, including Brentano pinx. (after the original artist) and C. Deucker sc., indicating the engraver responsible for the plate.
This piece has been custom framed and elevated with hand-marbled paper matting, individually painted to echo traditional marbled bookbinding papers of the 18th and 19th centuries. The warm palette and organic movement of the marbling complement the engraving beautifully, creating a layered, collected presentation that feels scholarly and timeless rather than decorative. Finished in a classic, contemporary wooden frame that complements the age and character of the print without overpowering it.
A striking and scholarly piece well suited to libraries, studies, or layered gallery walls, especially for collectors drawn to European history, imperial portraiture, and antique printmaking.
