19th c. Engraving of Heinrich der Vogler (Henry the Fowler)
A 19th-century engraved portrait of Heinrich der Vogler (Henry the Fowler), King of East Francia and founder of the Ottonian dynasty. Depicted in medieval dress with a contemplative, dignified bearing, the portrait reflects 19th-century interest in early Germanic rulers and national history.
The engraving was published as part of Meyer’s Conversations-Lexikon, with the image after Zwecker (“Zwecker pinx.”) and engraved by C. Deucker (“C. Deucker sc.”). The crisp linework and restrained tonal palette are characteristic of scholarly German engravings intended for both educational and decorative use.
This piece has been custom framed and elevated with hand-marbled paper matting, individually painted to echo traditional marbled bookbinding papers of the 18th and 19th centuries. The warm palette and organic movement of the marbling complement the engraving beautifully, creating a layered, collected presentation that feels scholarly and timeless rather than decorative. Finished in a classic, contemporary wooden frame that complements the age and character of the print without overpowering it.
A striking and scholarly piece well suited to libraries, studies, or layered gallery walls, especially for collectors drawn to European history, imperial portraiture, and antique printmaking.
