Italian Alabaster Bust “Mignon", Attributed to Giuseppe Bessi

Sale price$550.00

A finely carved alabaster bust depicting “Mignon,” a romantic and widely recognized literary figure of the 19th century. The character originates from Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and was later popularized through Mignon, where she is portrayed as a gentle, melancholic young woman—an idealized figure of innocence and longing.

Rendered here with soft, delicate features and subtle polychrome detailing, the bust captures that sense of quiet emotion characteristic of the subject. The figure is dressed in a flowing garment with blush tones and is set atop a contrasting marble base. Pieces of this type are commonly attributed to the Florentine sculptor Giuseppe Bessi, whose work reflects the late 19th-century fascination with literary and operatic heroines, produced for both Grand Tour travelers and decorative interiors.

Origin: Italy, late 19th to early 20th century.
Material: Carved alabaster with marble base.
Dimensions: Approx. 8" L x 4" W x 8.25" H.
Condition: Minor surface wear consistent with age; light patina and small marks; overall very good antique condition.
