Late 18th c. Folk Art Silk Stumpwork Floral Embroidery, A

Sale price$525.00

A finely worked 18th-century silk stumpwork embroidery depicting a flowering vase framed by delicate scrolling florals. Executed on a pale silk ground, the composition features raised stumpwork elements, varied stitch techniques, and subtle color shifts that reflect the hand of the maker rather than a repeated pattern.

This example is distinguished by cooler blue and green accents within the floral arrangement, lending it a softer, more restrained palette. The silk ground shows gentle texture and movement consistent with age, contributing to the depth and character of the piece.

Presented in a later oval frame that complements the embroidery, this work bridges folk art tradition and decorative textile history. Pieces of this nature were typically created as domestic needlework rather than formal court embroidery, making surviving examples increasingly scarce, particularly those retaining strong color and dimensional detail.

Origin: Likely England, 18th century.
Material: Silk ground with silk stumpwork embroidery; later oval frame.
Dimensions: 22" x 25".
Condition: Age-appropriate wear and toning to the silk ground; areas of gentle fading, surface texture, and silk separation consistent with age; embroidery remains well-articulated; frame in good vintage condition.
