Goddesses Engraving from "Antiquities of Herculaneum"

A finely executed Neoclassical engraving featuring three horizontal figural panels, each depicting reclining classical figures framed within ornamental borders. The composition draws directly from the visual language of antiquity, recalling Roman wall painting and decorative friezes translated through the precision of late 18th-century engraving.

The plate is designed by Nicola Vanni, noted as “R.D.” (Royal Designer), and engraved by Filippo Morghen, one of the most accomplished engravers of the Neoclassical period. This pairing places the work firmly within the academic tradition of Italian printmaking, where classical subjects were studied, refined, and reinterpreted with remarkable technical skill.

The engraving belongs to the print suite “Antiquities of Herculaneum” (original title: “Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte”), an eight-volume volume of engravings of the finds from the excavation of the ruins of Herculaneum in the Kingdom of Naples (now Campania, Italy). It was published between 1757 and 1792 by the Regia Stamperia, and copies were delivered to selected recipients across Europe.
