18th c. Italian Mythological Portraits Engraving from "Antiquities of Herculaneum"

Sale price$385.00

A finely executed Neoclassical engraving featuring four circular figural medallions, each depicting classically inspired subjects rendered with delicate linework and tonal shading. The composition reflects the period’s fascination with antiquity, drawing from Roman frescoes and sculptural forms translated into print.

The plate is engraved by Giuseppe Aloja, identified in the margin as a “Regius” or Royal engraver—an attribution that places the work within the refined academic tradition of late 18th-century Italian printmaking. The balanced arrangement and restraint of the composition give the piece a quiet architectural quality, while the precision of the engraving speaks to its craftsmanship.

Ancient Roman Portraits from the series "Antiquities of Herculaneum". The engraving belongs to the print suite “Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed” (original title: “Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte”), an eight-volume volume of engravings of the finds from the excavation of the ruins of Herculaneum in the Kingdom of Naples (now Campania, Italy).

Presented in a dark frame with crisp matting, it lends itself effortlessly to a layered, collected interior—equally compelling on its own or incorporated into a gallery wall.

Origin: Italy, 1757-1792; engraved by Giuseppe Aloja (Royal Engraver).
Material: Paper engraving with later frame and matting.
Dimensions: Approx. 17" W x 21.75" H.
Condition: Light toning and minor wear consistent with age; presented in a later frame; overall very good condition.
