Beginning in the early 1830s, manufacturers increasingly introduced tea services decorated with small, widely spaced painted motifs rather than densely painted floral compositions. Contemporary trade records actually refer to these as \u003cstrong\u003e“sprigged tea china”\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003e“Sprig Teas.”\u003c\/strong\u003e The approach was commercially clever: the small motifs required considerably less paint, fewer brushstrokes, and less specialized skill, allowing matched services to be produced more quickly while retaining the decorative appeal of hand painting.
