Associated with wine and revelry in Roman mythology, Bacchus was a fitting subject for the richly ornamented decorative metalwork of the Victorian period.

Pierced vine scrolls surround an arched rectangular opening, with a finely patterned inner border, a prominent leaf ornament below, and pendant finials at the lower corners. The design closely resembles examples attributed to Bradley & Hubbard, the Connecticut firm celebrated for its lamps and decorative household metalwork.
