Painted in oil on canvas, the scene combines the intimacy of an interior with the depth of a garden view beyond a pair of open French doors.

The room is remarkably detailed: deep plum-colored walls are hung salon-style with paintings and smaller framed works, while a piano or keyboard instrument with open sheet music sits beside a cabinet crowded with books, vessels, and flowers. Across the room, a small table is laid for tea beside green-upholstered chairs and a settee. A patterned green carpet and reflective parquet floor lead the eye toward the open doorway, where autumn foliage and a garden sculpture appear in brilliant daylight.

The stretcher bears a handwritten attribution to “R.
