Known as the “Dancing Hours” decoration, the figures are rendered in raised white relief, giving them the appearance of classical cameos set against the glossy body.

The lower portion of each beaker shifts to a warm buff ground worked with a finely textured basketweave or engine-turned border, a wonderful contrast to the smooth green glaze above. The combination of green, cream and white gives these a slightly earthier character than traditional blue-and-white jasperware while retaining the unmistakable Neoclassical influence associated with Spode and Copeland.

The design dates to the late 19th century, around 1891, when Copeland was producing a range of glazed jasperware-type pieces decorated with these dancing classical figures. Surviving examples bearing the Copeland Late Spode mark and registered-design information confirm the pattern's introduction around this period.

As candle vessels, these are especially beautiful because their tall, straight-sided form leaves the entire Dancing Hours procession visible. Display all three together down a dining table or mantel, or use them individually on a bedside table, bookshelf or library table. Once the candles are finished, the vessels remain collectible pieces of late Victorian Copeland Late Spode and can be displayed together as a small group of Neoclassical ceramics.

Origin: Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, Late 19th century, c. 1891
Maker: Copeland, Late Spode
Material: Glazed jasperware-type ceramic / sprigged earthenware
Condition: Excellent antique condition.
