Finished in a glossy ivory glaze, the woven relief gives the piece the appearance of wicker or woven cane despite being entirely ceramic.

An original Stern & Mann’s label survives inside. Stern & Mann was a historic department store in Canton, Ohio, founded in 1887 by Isidor Stern and Henry Mann.

The combination of basketry and animal form gives this piece a particularly charming naturalistic quality. Display it on open shelving, a kitchen hutch or dining-room sideboard, or use it as an unexpected centerpiece among transferware, majolica and other figural ceramics. Closed, it works beautifully simply as a piece of decorative sculpture.

Origin: Stern & Mann’s, Canton, Ohio
Material: Glazed ceramic
Dimensions: 11" L × 9" H × 5" D
Condition: Excellent condition with wear consistent with age and use.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0577/3505/3399/files/4DC2A0B0-774D-4AE2-AA34-DC2E19325429.jpg?v=1791315481
