The composition is inscribed “Buckingham Gate from Pimlico” beneath the image.

The watercolor depicts a gently curving roadway leading toward a gated entrance flanked by stone walls, arched openings, and substantial gateposts. Brick buildings stand to either side, while leafy trees rise beyond the entrance. The scene is rendered in delicate washes of blue, earthy brown, and soft gray, with a particularly expressive sky above the historic streetscape.

Buckingham Gate takes its name from its proximity to Buckingham House, the predecessor of Buckingham Palace. The surrounding area underwent substantial changes as the royal residence and its grounds were developed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Historic views of the neighborhood offer a fascinating glimpse of London before the familiar arrangement of streets and royal buildings took shape.

The composition is especially appealing for its combination of architectural detail and landscape painting, with the winding road drawing the eye toward the distant gates and trees. Presented in a black-and-gold frame, this watercolor would make a handsome addition to a gallery wall of British landscapes, London views, or historic architectural studies.

Origin: England, Early 19th century
Subject: Buckingham Gate from Pimlico, London
Medium: Watercolor and ink on paper, apparently
Inscription: “Buckingham Gate from Pimlico”
Dimensions: 10.5" W x 9.25" H
Condition: Framed condition with visible foxing, scattered spotting, and discoloration to the paper, particularly toward the lower portion of the composition.
